Craniosacral therapy developed from the work of an American osteopath, Dr William Sutherland in the early 1900s. He identified that the cranial bones actually move and that these movements affect the entire body. Everything is connected in the body, once this continuity is interrupted it brings the health and vitality in to question. Through further research he later discovered the body has rhythms. Theses rhythms which can be measured by science, show us the different levels of the system down through the cellular level. These movements are a direct expression of health, not only affecting the physical but the deeper more subtle aspects of our lives. These movements are also inextricably linked with emotional and mental health. Restriction of movement inhibits the body's natural capacity to self-heal and repair. Any limitation, restriction or absence of the movements creates a reduction in the expression of natural wellbeing.

Using the power of touch through the hands to feel these movements allows us to facilitate change in areas of restriction and mobility. Craniosacral therapy supports health in the entire being. It helps increase physical vitality, and well-being not only affecting structural change but also having much wider implications, emotionally and spiritually. The resulting increased sense of well-being can help with many aspects of life from strengthening the immune system, removing recurrent pain due to old injuries.

How many treatments will I need?

For all new clients, we recommend an initial 90 min consultation to allow a full history to be taken prior to treatment being performed. Follow up treatments are 45mins. During the consultation we can assess the major issues, take a full case history and work out a treatment plan. Although each patient is treated individually, according to the presenting conditions, we recommend at least three treatments initially. This will allow the body to really respond as some systems can be defensive, which takes more time to heal.

What happens during a session?

Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle non – invasive touch therapy, subtle and profound. It assists the body's natural capacity for self-repair, to heal itself from within. It is suitable for babies, children, and the elderly, and adults in acutely painful conditions. In a Craniosacral session, you will usually lie (or sometimes sit) fully-clothed on a treatment couch. Contact is made by placing hands lightly on your body and tuning in to what is happening by 'listening' in an intuitive state via the hands. Contact is light, not imposing on the comfort of lying still. You will always feel in a state of control, with feedback often given through the treatment, which keeps you well informed the whole time.

How will I feel?

Firstly you will notice a deep sense of relaxation, sometimes even internal movement of the tissues and organs. It's very subtle so sometimes the benefits won't be felt until days later. The body's inherent life force is immediately activated upon touch. The body will then show any restrictions, tension asymmetries, twists and pulls, through years of illness, accidents, birth trauma, anything contributing to an unhealthy system. The therapist will then follow these effects into their root cause, working with the body to obtain homeostasis. The power house of the system lies between the cranium and the sacrum. It directly influences the spine and nervous system, which can show us illness, disease, anything that causes discomfort can be read and identified through palpating this area.

Craniosacral Therapy compliments most other treatments due to its gentle subtle approach. Many patients have found it beneficial to have in parallel with colon hydrotherapy as the treatment works directly on the nervous system, which controls the body's ability to release the bowels. It also works well with acupuncture and manual lymphatic drainage massage by helping to release blockages in the system.
